During my studies in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at UCL, I came across two important concepts related to mental health: mental languishing and mental flourishing. These terms highlight different states of well-being and can help us better understand where we might be in our own mental health journey.
Mental Languishing: A state of stagnation and emptiness, mental languishing is often described as a feeling that life has lost its vibrancy. It’s not necessarily depression, but rather a sense of being “stuck,” where motivation dwindles, and it becomes hard to find purpose or excitement in everyday activities. People in this state might not actively struggle with mental illness, but the effects on their overall well-being can still be significant. As noted by Keyes (2002), languishing is a subtle but impactful experience, and its effects on our mental and physical health can be profound (Iasiello et al., 2019). You might not feel fully unwell, but there’s a sense of something missing.
Mental Flourishing: On the opposite end of the spectrum lies mental flourishing—a state of thriving where you feel a strong sense of vitality, purpose, and satisfaction. Those who are flourishing typically experience high levels of happiness, engagement, and overall life satisfaction. Flourishing is associated with positive emotional and psychological well-being, where individuals feel deeply connected to their life’s goals and enjoy a sense of accomplishment and joy.
So, where do you feel you sit? Is it somewhere in between? Many of us might find ourselves experiencing a bit of both states, depending on the day or life circumstances. It’s essential to recognize where we are, as understanding our current mental state can help guide us in taking the necessary steps to improve or maintain our well-being. Whether you’re languishing or flourishing, remember that growth and change are always possible.
I’d love to hear your thoughts—do you recognize either of these states in your own life? How do you move from one to the other? Feel free to share your experiences in the comments!
