My personal journey with anxiety

I have faced my own challenges with anxiety—particularly panic disorder, agoraphobia, and insomnia. These experiences gave me profound empathy for those struggling with similar issues. Fortunately, through coaching and therapy, I was able to overcome them, which deepened my understanding of the power of a holistic approach to personal growth.

As I worked with leaders, I noticed a recurring theme: anxiety often played a significant role in leadership struggles. My desire to help others facing similar challenges led me to establish Calm That Anxiety.

About Calm That Anxiety

Calm That Anxiety was born out of my personal journey with anxiety. I lived with panic disorder and agoraphobia for over 15 years before I became aware of the deeply ingrained patterns of behaviour that were holding me back. Through purposeful action, I overcame many long-standing fears. This experience showed me just how powerful the mind can be in both reinforcing negative patterns and breaking free from them

Why Calm That Anxiety?

As I reflected on my own transformation, I realized that anxiety is a common thread in both professional and personal life. Whether I was coaching a leader on business performance or providing therapy to someone overwhelmed with worry, anxiety remained a central theme.

So, what is anxiety? It often involves excessive worry—either about practical challenges happening now or hypothetical situations that may lead to negative outcomes in the future.

We often define ourselves by our struggles, making them feel permanent and unchangeable. We say, “I am an anxious person” or “I am a bad leader” instead of “I feel anxious right now” or “I am facing a leadership challenge.”

Do you see the difference? The first phrases make anxiety or leadership struggles part of our identity, while the second acknowledges them as temporary experiences that can be worked through.

The word That in Calm That Anxiety signifies separation. Anxiety or any challenge you’re facing does not define you—it’s something you can work on and move past with the right support.

My intention behind the word Calm is to instil hope. Whether you feel stuck in a leadership dilemma, overwhelmed by stress, or tense in your body, there are practical tools and techniques that can help you regain clarity and move forward with confidence.

Bringing it all together, Calm That Anxiety is about recognizing challenges as temporary and equipping you with the strategies to overcome them.

I look forward to working with you.

Work in the community

At Calm That Anxiety, I am deeply committed to sharing well-being tools that have helped me and my clients while breaking down barriers to mental health support. Many individuals, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, face additional obstacles due to cultural stigma, disability, age, or life circumstances. My outreach work focuses on raising awareness, fostering conversations, and ensuring that no one has to struggle alone.

Free workshops

Two free community workshops each year to support charitable organisations and local initiatives.

Pro Bono coaching for community leaders

Two pro bono coaching packages per year for leaders making a difference in their communities.

Partnerships

Seeking partnerships with organisations, businesses, and community groups that share my vision of making mental health support more accessible.

What my clients say

"This event provided a safe space for open discussions about mental health, which is particularly important for men from marginalized communities who often face additional challenges in seeking support."
— Romayne Etwaroo,
"With Ryan's help I have grown in confidence he has employed different techniques and tools and challenged me constructively where appropriate. I have very much appreciated my sessions with him and feel they have been invaluable in my leadership journey."
— Regional Director,
NatWest Group
"I was feeling really low when we first starting the sessions and that was transcending into my interactions. I made tweaks, undertook lots of reflection and felt I had accountability with Ryan, and finished the sessions feeling much more confident and happier. I feel I\'m coming across much more positive and confident in my interactions with stakeholders/ my presentations etc. I\'m getting feedback that this is indeed the case. I\'m feeling much more productive in my role and also more valued as I\'m more efficient and feel I\'m delivering better results"
— Head of Customer Experience,
NatWest Group.
"Ryan has a very authentic style and great awareness of the subject matter on which he covers. As a result of our relationship, I feel infinitely better equipped to identify, manage, and respond to challenges as they arise for me. This is assisting my executive performance decision making, recognising when I need to take a pause but also when I need to “permission” myself to remember it is very ok for me to prioritise my wellbeing. "
— Mark Crathern,
Managing Director, RBS International.
"By using certain techniques in an effective fashion, he has been able to build a clear vision for me as to how things will be/look/feel like these have been met. He did not let me get away with vague plans/timetables, but challenged me as to what I will commit to doing and how I would combat and overcome possible obstacle that may arise during the journey of completing my goals. This helped me to have a definitive plan of how I was going to tackle all of these and with them being broken down into smaller chunks, felt more manageable and possible. "
— Simon Ong,
Author, Life Coach & Business Strategist
"A wonderful soul that I will remember as the person who made me leap forward and grab hold of my dreams and turn them into reality, shouting I can do it!"
— Trish Barker,
Life Coach
"There were a number, but the biggest value for me was the feeling of empowerment. My coach was curious and used exploratory questions to understand my scenarios or issues in more detail. What I also found insightful was how they allowed me to come to my own conclusion on this and allowed me to suggest what actions I could take to resolve them."
— Felicity Sutherland,
Implementation and Risk Lead
"On behalf of myself and the St Joseph’s Carers Group, I want to say a massive thank you for your inspiring session. Your calm and kind presence made such a difference, and your enthusiasm encouraged us all to participate. The interactive nature of your session helped us connect, reflect, and even discover some hidden talents! The time flew by, and we all left feeling lighter and more present. We truly appreciate your generosity in sharing your time and expertise with us."
— Sue Cannon,
St Joseph’s Hospice Carers Group
"There are a lot of people living in the area with mental health challenges, so an event like this was incredibly valuable. It helps people seek support, even if they don’t openly admit they need it."
— Ian Ambersley,
Owner of Ian’s Barbershop
